Gansu furniture is known for its vibrant colours and decorative painting, and this sideboard is a striking example of the style.
The central doors and outer drawers are set against bold coloured grounds, each panel painted with lively flora and fauna. A continuous auspicious motif runs along the top border and legs. What makes this piece particularly interesting are the poems written on it.
On the extreme right and left panels are lines from Mao Zedong:
雄关漫道真如铁
而今迈步从头越
These lines speak of resilience, recognising hardship, yet choosing to move forward with determination.
On the vertical frames between the doors are lines from Lu Xun:
横眉冷对千夫指
俯首甘为孺子牛
This couplet reflects strength of character, standing firm in one’s convictions while remaining humble and willing to serve others.
Decorative and meaningful, this sideboard reflects conviction, perseverance, and purpose.
