In ancient China, a bride’s family would prepare a dowry chest filled with fine clothes and linens to accompany the bride to the groom’s house on the wedding day. These chests, usually adorned with double happiness 囍 and other auspicious motifs, were carried by two male carriers using a long pole, and they would follow behind the bridal sedan chair.

This stacked dowry chest features three layers of trays with carvings of double happiness on both sides. The central vase in the painting symbolizes peace and harmony in the union, while the peonies represent youthfulness. On the left, a persimmon and pomegranate symbolize good luck and fertility. The pot of narcissus on the right, known as 水仙 shuǐ xiān or “water immortal” in Chinese, symbolizes immortality and good fortune.
