Red & Gold Carved Fujian Sideboard
This red & gold carved sideboard originated from Fujian province, China, and is approx. 80-100 years old. Sideboards from Fujian are typically made of Elm wood, Fir wood and the carved panels are made of Camphor wood, and this type of sideboard has one distinct trait: its tabletop is made of a single plank of Ficus wood.
This particular piece is in very good original condition, and we had left it as it is, the colour and patina is beautiful and the gold paint on the carvings is almost all intact. The design is also very unusual as the middle doors are recessed, and the profile at the two sides are curved.
The carvings throughout the cabinet feature magpies and cherry blossoms. Magpies are known as the bearer of good news, and this combination also symbolize looking forward to spring time, which is the Lunar new year.
