Antique Hokkien Sideboard in Natural Wood Finish

This antique carved sideboard originates from Fujian and features exceptional relief carvings with a traditional bird and flower theme. The doors and drawers are also detailed with relief carvings of the Buddhist swastika symbol. While pieces from this region were traditionally finished in red, black, and gold, this sideboard has been stripped due to damage to the original lacquer. With the original colours removed, the remarkable detail and clarity of the carvings are completely visible.

A distinctive trait of Fujian sideboards is the tabletop, which is crafted from a single, solid plank of Ficus wood. Over the years, the tabletop sustained damage in two areas, which have since been repaired. Close-up photographs of these restorations are included in the gallery.
