The antique chest from Shandong is made of Elm & Pine, and the painting and brass hardware are all original. The main painting features two vases with flowers in them, and what looks like a pair of peaches on the left side; peaches symbolize longevity. What is interesting is the curved decorative object in the middle, it serves either as a scepter or a talisman and is called “ruyi“, which translates into “as desired; as you wish”. Resting on the ruyi is a book, this combination could symbolise the owner’s desire to do well in his studies.
