Vintage Shanxi Red Painted Chest

A stunning vintage Shanxi red lacquer chest. The vivid cinnabar red — the colour of celebration and good fortune — sets the stage for a beautifully painted scene of curio stands, flowers and vases. The front of the chest is red while the sides are green.

The painting incorporates several auspicious fruits, including apples for safety, Buddha’s hand citrons for good luck, bottle gourds for longevity, and narcissus for good fortune. Surrounding the main scene are flowers representing the four seasons, symbolising a wish for good luck throughout the year.
