VIntage Zhejiang Kitchen Cabinet in Black
The original colour of these cabinets were usually dark brown or reddish brown, but it had been badly damaged and therefore we had this re-painted in a distressed black colour. All the doors are slatted to allow air circulation, and gauze was stuck on the inside of the doors to prevent flies from touching the food. The bottom shelf has sliding doors and slatted shelves to store “wet” items so that the moisture can drip down; some believed live poultry were kept in those bottom compartments. This cabinet has a nice tapered shape which makes it look less boxy, and the carvings of bats & fishes on the middle doors, symbolising good fortune and abundance.
