Vintage Gansu Painted Sideboard
This painted sideboard was from Gansu province, China, and it has beautiful original colour and painting. It’s burnt orange colour is quite unusual and the paintings on the front are very delicate. There are a few vases on the bottom right, vases symbolize peace as the Chinese words for vase and peace sound similar. There are various types of flowers from different seasons, which shows the owner’s desire to have peace throughout the year.
There are some words on the front which gives us a clue about the age of this cabinet. On the left, the words 乙酉 tells us this is from 1945, and it was September in the lunar calendar. This was soon after the end of World War II in China.
